The Philippines is making waves at the 2024 Paris Olympics, marking a century of participation in the prestigious event. With a delegation of 22 athletes competing across nine sports, the nation is showcasing its talent and determination on the global stage.
The opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics was a grand spectacle, and Team Philippines was proudly represented by boxers Carlo Paalam and Nesthy Petecio as flag bearers⁴. This honor was initially proposed for weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, the country’s first Olympic gold medalist, but due to her non-qualification, the role was given to Paalam and Petecio, both silver medalists from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
The Filipino athletes have had a promising start. Gymnast Carlos Yulo and rower Joanie Delgaco were among the first to compete, with Yulo advancing to the finals in multiple events³. Delgaco also showed strong performances, progressing to the next rounds in rowing.
Carlos Yulo, Joanie Delgaco, and Aira Villegas have advanced to the next rounds of the 2024 Paris Olympics! Their outstanding performances in gymnastics, rowing, and boxing, respectively, highlight their dedication and skill.
In boxing, Carlo Paalam and Nesthy Petecio have both won their initial bouts, moving closer to potential medal finishes¹. The boxing team, historically a strong contender for the Philippines, is once again proving its mettle.
Despite the strong start, the journey has not been without challenges. The Philippine delegation faced a potential ban from using the national flag due to non-compliance with doping regulations by the Philippine Sports Commission. However, this issue was resolved in March 2024, allowing the athletes to compete under their national flag.
The athletes have also had to adapt to the unique conditions of the Paris Olympics. Unlike previous editions, the Philippine team conducted a one-month training camp in Metz, France, to acclimatize and prepare thoroughly. This strategic move is expected to pay off as the competition progresses.
Looking ahead, the Philippine Olympic Committee is optimistic about surpassing the performance of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, where the country won its first-ever gold medal⁴. With strong contenders in athletics, boxing, fencing, golf, gymnastics, judo, rowing, swimming, and weightlifting, the prospects are bright.
The support from the Filipino community, both in Paris and back home, has been overwhelming. The athletes are drawing inspiration from the cheers and encouragement, fueling their drive to excel and bring pride to the nation.
As the 2024 Paris Olympics continue, Team Philippines remains focused and determined. The early successes and the resilience shown in overcoming challenges highlight the spirit and dedication of the Filipino athletes. With several events still to come, the nation eagerly awaits more thrilling performances and potential medal victories.
