Shanghai launch of new global event series offers intimate look into the creative journey of Langham Luminary Ayanga’s acclaimed musical

The Langham Hotels and Resorts (The Langham) has launched “Luminaries in Residence”, a new global event series that expands its “Your Story. Our Legacy.” brand campaign through exhibitions, performances and other experiences with its cultural ambassadors, known as Langham Luminaries. The first installment, “The Artistry of Ayanga”, is a behind-the-scenes photography exhibition of the original musical “The Message” created by actor and composer Ayanga – one of China’s most recognised musical theatre talents, widely known for his lead role in the Chinese production of “The Phantom of the Opera”.
Featuring over 25 photographs, the exhibition offers an intimate look beyond the finished performance of the musical adaptation of Mai Jia’s celebrated spy novel of the same name. The images document the dedication and collaborative spirit of Ayanga and the creative team behind the production, from quiet moments of concentration in the rehearsal room to the shared exhilaration of a standing ovation. The exhibition is open to the public at The Langham, Shanghai, Xintiandi until 10 September 2026.
“The Langham has been a gathering place for artists and visionaries for 160 years. We are extending that tradition through ‘Luminaries in Residence’ by creating experiences that allow guests to engage more closely with our Luminaries and their work. Ayanga’s dedication to his craft is truly inspiring, making him a fitting choice to open this new global initiative,” Langham Hospitality Group (LHG) CEO Bob van den Oord said.

The “Luminaries in Residence” series builds on The Langham’s award-winning “Your Story. Our Legacy.” campaign. Launched in 2025, it celebrates the remarkable figures from culture, design, and gastronomy whose personal journeys reflect the multifaceted spirit of The Langham. Ayanga was welcomed as a Langham Luminary in early 2026, joining a distinguished community of creative talents whose stories are now part of the brand’s shared heritage.
The global event series will continue at The Langham’s properties around the world, with upcoming experiences featuring Grammy Award-winning violinist and Langham Luminary Joshua Bell, among other collaborations to be announced.
