Who were the women who accompanied Jesus? Explore their stories and discover how their faith, courage, and service still inspire Christians today.

The Gospels often focus on Jesus and His twelve disciples, but they also introduce another group of faithful followers who played an important role in His ministry—the women who accompanied Him. They traveled with Jesus, supported His mission, cared for practical needs, remained faithful during His crucifixion, and became witnesses to His resurrection.

Luke 8:1-3 records, “After this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him, and also some women… These women were helping to support them out of their own means.”

Although their contributions were often quiet, they demonstrated remarkable faith, generosity, and courage. Here are some of the women mentioned in the Bible and the lessons Christians can learn from their lives.

1. Mary Magdalene: A Life Transformed by Jesus

Mary Magdalene is perhaps the best-known woman who accompanied Jesus. Luke tells us that Jesus had delivered her from seven demons, and from that point forward she became one of His devoted followers.

She remained near the cross during Christ’s crucifixion and was among the first to visit His tomb. Even more significantly, she became the first person to witness the risen Christ.

Mary’s story reminds us that no one is beyond God’s grace. A transformed life naturally leads to faithful service. Your past does not define your future when God changes your heart.

2. Joanna: Using Her Influence for God’s Kingdom

Joanna was the wife of Chuza, a household manager for King Herod. Despite her connection to a powerful household, she chose to support Jesus’ ministry.

She helped provide for Jesus and His disciples from her own resources and was also among the women who discovered the empty tomb.

Joanna teaches us that God can use our position, influence, and resources to advance the gospel. Whatever He has entrusted to us can become a tool for His kingdom when offered with a willing heart.

3. Susanna: Faithful Even Without the Spotlight

Very little is recorded about Susanna beyond her inclusion in Luke’s account. Yet her name appears alongside the women who faithfully supported Jesus throughout His ministry.

Although Scripture doesn’t tell us much about her, God considered her faithfulness worth recording.

Not every act of service receives public recognition. Christians can faithfully serve in the church, their communities, and their families knowing that God values obedience more than applause.

4. Mary, the Mother of James, Salome, and the Other Faithful Women

The Gospels also mention women such as Mary, the mother of James, Salome, and “many others” who followed Jesus from Galilee. They remained near the cross when many had fled and later came to anoint Jesus’ body.

Matthew 27:55 writes, “Many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to care for his needs.” 

Their steadfast presence reflected unwavering faith, even during moments of sorrow and uncertainty.

Faithfulness means remaining close to Christ not only in joyful seasons but also during trials. Through prayer and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, Christians can continue trusting Him even when they do not fully understand His plans.

Their Legacy Still Inspires Christians Today

The women who accompanied Jesus remind us that God’s kingdom advances through hearts willing to serve. Some offered financial support. Others cared for practical needs. Many stood by Jesus when others walked away, and several became the first witnesses of His resurrection—the promise that points us toward Heaven.

Their stories show that faith is demonstrated through generosity, courage, humility, and perseverance. Whether our role is visible or behind the scenes, every act of obedience matters to God. Like these faithful women, we are invited to follow Christ wholeheartedly and participate in His mission wherever He leads.
