Trachtenberg’s breakthrough role came in Harriet the Spy, where she played the titular character, an inquisitive and determined 11-year-old aspiring writer.

Based on the beloved children’s book by Louise Fitzhugh, the film followed Harriet as she secretly observed the world around her, documenting everything in her notebook—only for her observations to backfire when they were discovered. This Nickelodeon-produced movie introduced Trachtenberg to a wider audience.

2. Buffy the Vampire Slayer (2000–2003)

In Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Trachtenberg took on one of her most debated roles as Dawn Summers, Buffy’s younger sister. Introduced in the show’s fifth season, Dawn’s sudden appearance in Buffy’s life was a major plot twist, later revealed to be a mystical “Key” transformed into human form to be protected by the Slayer.

Though her character initially faced criticism from fans for being whiny, Trachtenberg brought depth to Dawn as the series progressed.

3. EuroTrip (2004)
