After 36 years, Beetlejuice has returned to spook you once more! Say his name three times, and he will be summoned.
Michael Keaton reprises his role as the beloved mischievous ghost in Tim Burton’s “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.”
Warner Bros. has unveiled the trailer for Tim Burton’s continuation of his 1988 cult favorite horror-comedy “Beetlejuice,” featuring Michael Keaton returning as the eerie titular character. The sequel, officially named “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” is scheduled to premiere on September 6, 2024.
On Thursday, March 22, the initial teaser trailer for the sequel to the 1988 horror-comedy hit was released. The teaser begins with Jenna Ortega, known for her role in “Scream,” cycling past Miss Shannon’s School for Girls. Subsequently, a children’s choir delivers a haunting rendition of the Jamaican folk tune “Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)” at what seems to be a funeral, attended by Ortega alongside familiar faces from “Beetlejuice,” Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara.
The trailer ends ominously as Ryder’s character is shown in a state of horror, encountering the ghastly presence of Betelgeuse. With a mischievous grin, Betelgeuse, portrayed by Keaton, declares, ‘The juice is on the loose.'” Warner Bros also unveiled two images providing a glimpse into the forthcoming movie, one featuring Keaton adorned in his iconic striped black-and-white suit and tousled hair, evoking a wave of nostalgia among fans as he resembled his spectral character once more.
Ryder is set to return to her prominent role as Lydia Deetz, while O’Hara will reprise her character as Lydia’s mother, Delia Deetz. Ortega, known for her haunted roles like Wednesday Addams in Burton’s Netflix series, will take on the role of Lydia’s daughter, Astrid. Theroux’s role as Rory has few details available at this time.
In the upcoming sequel to ‘Beetlejuice,’ the storyline will revolve around the Deetz family’s experiences following a death that triggers Beetlejuice’s reappearance. The plot of the original movie focuses on Barbara and Adam Maitland, portrayed by Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin respectively. After their demise, they enlist the help of the titular demon to remove the Deetz family from their residence.
Filming for the movie commenced in 2023 following extensive discussions and a previously unsuccessful endeavor known as “Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian.” In an interview with an international newspaper way back 2019, Burton expressed skepticism about the sequel’s realization, despite the release of a Broadway musical adaptation of the original film that same year.
In the comment section of the trailer shared on Warner Bros’ YouTube channel, the excitement of fans can be read, especially those who have watched the first movie.
“The dude has not been playing this character for 36 years and in one sentence makes me nostalgic and extremely happy to see him.”
“The fact that back in 88/89- Michael did Beetlejuice and Batman back to back, and now to come back as both over 35 years later is just too awesome!”
“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” has got to be the most perfect title for a Beetlejuice sequel. I absolutely can’t wait to see Michael Keaton return in one of his most iconic roles!”
