The Philippines confirmed that it is expanding a lockdown for unvaccinated people on January 5, 2022, due to the rise of COVID-19 cases in the country.

According to Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Benhur Abalos, the Metro Manila Council had already approved the resolution which restricts the movement of individuals who have not received the jab.

However, they will be permitted to leave their homes for essential reasons such as  medical needs, food, water, and work. Dining in restaurants, attending social events, and leisure travels will be  prohibited.

Travel restrictions have also been imposed by AirAsia Philippines after the Metro Manila Council urged restrictions among the unvaccinated in order to ease the spiking COVID-19 cases.

“In compliance with the resolution signed by Metro Manila mayors, we will continue to fly eligible vaccinated individuals and unvaccinated guests with essential travel passes only,” AirAsia Philippines spokesman Steve Dailisan said on Wednesday .

“AirAsia will always prioritize the safety of our guests while remaining committed to their needs for air transportation,” he added.

Apart from AirAsia, bus stations in Cubao have also implemented a ‘no vaccination card, no ride’ policy.

It is also important to note that the Philippines is included in the list of eight countries that are currently facing a two-week ban into Hong Kong, effective January 8.

On January 6, the Philippines logged in an additional 17,220 COVID-19 infections, bringing the country’s total number of cases to 2,888,917. Meanwhile, total active cases have now reached 56,561 and 29 more Omicron cases have been detected.
