When Filipinos celebrate Halloween, they are more excited about dressing up as mythical creatures and attending parties. However, these costumes actually served a purpose during Samhain, the ancient Celtic celebration which Halloween was derived from.
These outfits served to deceive malevolent spirits so they don’t harm people during this time when the veil between this world and the other is said to be thinnest. Looking a lot less like humans will have these spirits thinking that we are creatures of the nether realm like them.
Halloween costumes has evolved from dressing up as mythical creatures to characters from pop culture. Cosplaying, which was popular in Japan, has become somewhat of a norm.
Whether just single or a pair, here are 7 best Halloween looks of Filipino celebrities this 2022:
1. Andrea Brillantes as La Muerte from ‘The Book of Life’
In this photo by Andrea Beldua, Andrea Brillantes exudes confidence as La Muerte, an iconic character from the 2014 animated film ‘The Book of Life’. This is what she wore when she hosted an intimate Halloween party for her friends last October 30 called “Fright Night by Blythe”. Patrick Isorena, who glammed up A-list celebrities including the first ever Drag Race Philippines winner, designer her outfit.
2. Kyline Alcantara (The Grinch) and Mavy Legaspi (The Mask)
The rumored teen couple who are Kapuso rising stars surely know how to show off their close relationship. MavLine (what their pairing is called) cosplayed characters played by Jim Carrey and Dookie Ducay’s their photographer. Popular fantasy make-up influencer Drian Bautista made sure their looks will make heads turn.
3. Pia Wurtzbach as Mojo Jojo from ‘The Powerpuff Girls’
In-demand conceptual photographer didn’t just capture Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach with his lens, he will also feature her in his upcoming vlog titled ‘The Powerpuff Gayz’. Pia subverts stereotype by dressing up as the male primate villain of the cartoon with the big brain. It’s as if she wants to tell us that women can be intelligent beyond your wildest imaginations, too.
4. KD Estrada (Victor Van Dort) and Alexa Ilacad (Emily) from ‘The Corpse Bride’
The two teen stars from Pinoy Big Brother Kumunity: Season 10 captured via the lens of Dookie Ducay are eyecatching in their blue sppoky glam. ‘The Corpse Bride’ is a 2005 animated musical dark fantasy film by Tim Burton made using stop-motion technology. Maison Soriano graduated from deisgn school 3 years ago, but his tasteful design of their gown and suit assures us he will go places.
5. Kylie Verzosa
This collaboration of ace photographer BJ Pascual with top make-up artist Jelly Eugenio titled ‘Disco Heaven’ resulted in five Filipina celebrities looking bloody good. Kylie is one of them. She stands out not just because of her fangs, but because she gamely basked in the pool of blood with her hands and knees.
6. Barbie Imperial as Chucky from ‘Child’s Play’
Another male fictional character played by a female, this photo from Barbie Imperial’s Instagram was definitely taken before she attended Blythe’s (Andrea Brillantes) intimate Halloween party. She might now have Chucky’s freckles and stitches, but she sure rocked that orange hair, jumpsuit, and striped off-shoulder.
7. Myrtle Sarrosa as Fade from ‘Valorant’
It’s not surprising that this seasoned cosplayer made it to the list, as well as this fan favorite Valorant character. This photo from her Instagram was taken before she attended the Riot event at ESGS 2022 (Electronic Sports and Gaming Summit) held at the SMX Convention Center. And yes, she had her hair bleached and colored to look like an authentic Fade.
