A Timeline of Jesus’ Life

Two thousand years ago, a man named Jesus emerged from Nazareth and changed history. Known in Hebrew-Aramaic as Yeshua, meaning “Yahweh is salvation,” Jesus is also called Christ, from the Greek Christos, meaning “the Anointed One.” His life and ministry are recorded in the four Gospel—Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John—which present Him as the Word of God, the Savior of the world, and the foundation of the Christian faith.

Jesus was born in Bethlehem and laid in a manger. Scripture records, “She gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in clothes and placed him in a manger” (Luke 2:7). Shepherds came to worship Him, and later wise men offered gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Raised in Nazareth, Jesus lived in obedience to His parents, growing “in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man” (Luke 2:52).

At twelve years old, Jesus amazed teachers in the temple during Passover. When His parents found Him, He said, “Did you not know that I must be about my Father’s business?” (Luke 2:49). This moment revealed His awareness of His divine mission even in youth.

Around the age of thirty, Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan River. As He came out of the water, “the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove… And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased’” (Matthew 3:16–17). This marked the beginning of His public ministry.

Jesus then traveled preaching the Kingdom of God. He called twelve disciples and taught with authority, saying, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart” and “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:37–39). He proclaimed repentance, forgiveness of sins, and salvation through faith, declaring, “I am the way and the truth and the life” (John 14:6).

Throughout His ministry, Jesus performed miracles that revealed His power. He healed the sick, calmed storms, fed multitudes, and raised the dead. When He stilled the sea, the disciples asked, “Who is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!” (Mark 4:41).

Before His death, Jesus shared the Last Supper with His disciples. He broke bread and said, “This is my body, which is given for you,” and took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood” (Luke 22:19–20). That night, He was betrayed, arrested, and put on trial.

Jesus was crucified under Pontius Pilate, mocked, beaten, and nailed to a cross. As He suffered, He prayed, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing” (Luke 23:34). He died as a sacrifice for sin, declaring, “It is finished” (John 19:30).

On the third day, Jesus rose from the dead. The angel proclaimed, “He is not here; he has risen, just as he said” (Matthew 28:6). He ascended into heaven. Scripture affirms, “This Jesus… will come back in the way you have seen him go into heaven” (Acts 1:11) again.
