Actor Who ‘Should Be Dead’ Says Faith in God Led to Miracle Recovery

Actor Jesse Hutch, best known for his roles in romantic dramas and family-friendly films like A Christmas Blessing, has shared a life-changing testimony that goes beyond his on-screen performances.
In a recent sit-down interview, Hutch recounted a harrowing near-death experience that he describes as nothing short of miraculous—a moment that solidified his unwavering faith in God.
Long before he stepped onto a film set, Hutch was living an adventurous life as a whitewater rafting guide while attending college. The thrill of the wilderness was something he embraced. “I was a nature guy,” he shared. But one rafting trip nearly cost him his life.
It was a sunny day, and the river’s water level was unusually high. Hutch was navigating a stretch known for its powerful rapids when his boat capsized.
He was plunged underwater into an area called the “green room”—a deep, swirling current where sunlight filters through the water, casting an eerie green hue. Unable to surface, Hutch felt a crushing pressure grip his body. “I wasn’t panicking yet,” he said, “but I knew I was running out of air.”
As he struggled to swim, the situation quickly turned dire. His body involuntarily inhaled water. “It felt like someone poured liquid concrete into my lungs,” he recalled. “Everything went numb. I felt my muscles die.” It was in that moment, suspended between life and death, that he surrendered.
“I knew I was finished,” Hutch admitted. “And then, I had complete peace. I told God, ‘I’m in your hands.’” That serenity, he said, was the most profound peace he has ever felt.
Miraculously, Hutch’s unconscious body floated downstream and was discovered. He had been underwater for an estimated 11 to 22 minutes—well beyond the time frame typically considered survivable. “Three minutes without oxygen, and you’re gone,” he said. “Yet I was alive. Talking. Hearing. Remembering.”
Even more astounding was his recovery. Despite drowning, he suffered no permanent brain damage or hearing loss. “My eardrums should have burst,” he said. “But I was healed in weeks. That’s a miracle.”
Hutch had accepted Christ as a child, praying with his grandmother and receiving his first Bible, which he still owns. But the drowning experience reshaped his understanding of faith and surrender. “God showed me I’m not in control. That’s His job,” he said.
He believes his survival wasn’t just a second chance at life—it was a calling. Soon after, he felt led into acting, a career he had never considered before. “It was like God planted that desire in me,” he shared.
Today, Hutch continues to credit God’s hand in every aspect of his life. “There’s no other explanation. I should be dead—but I’m here, and I believe that’s for a reason.”
