The Department of Education (DepEd) assured immediate support for its personnel and schools affected by recent typhoons, following the declaration of states of calamity in several parts of the country due to the combined effects of Tropical Depression Dante, Tropical Storm Emong, and Habagat.

Education Secretary Sonny Angara joined President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and other Cabinet officials during the recent National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) meeting to coordinate nationwide disaster response and recovery efforts.

Angara said that President Marcos is concerned on both the education continuity and the welfare of learners and personnel affected by the calamity.

“Hindi po natin pababayaan ang ating mga paaralan, guro, at estudyante sa gitna ng kalamidad. Gagawin natin ang lahat para sila’y mabilis na makabangon at makapagpatuloy sa pagbibigay ng edukasyon,” Secretary Angara said.

For affected schools, DepEd’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Service (DRRMS) has initiated release of response funds to support urgent cleaning and clearing operations. Schools have also been instructed to activate contingency plans, safeguard learning materials and equipment, and coordinate with local disaster councils.

The Department is also collaborating with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) for the utilization of Quick Response Funds (QRF) in affected schools, in line with government efforts to streamline post-disaster infrastructure response.

Additional assistance may also be provided through the National Indemnity Insurance Program (NIIP), which offers comprehensive insurance protection to public school buildings against fire, lightning, and natural calamities. This insurance coverage was secured through DepEd’s collaboration with the GSIS and the Bureau of the Treasury (BTr).

As of July 23, 6pm, DepEd has recorded 1,876 classrooms with minor damage, 562 with major damage, 53l that are totally damaged, and 232 damaged hygiene facilities.

Meanwhile, teachers and staff in calamity-declared areas may avail of DepEd’s Provident Fund loan, while the Department’s Human Resource units are ready to assist in processing GSIS Calamity Loans and applications for a 30-day Calamity Leave.

In cases of disaster-related injuries or fatalities, DepEd reiterated that personnel can file claims under the GSIS-issued Group Personal Accident Insurance (GPAI) policy. This covers accidental death or dismemberment up to ₱100,000, and medical reimbursements up to ₱30,000 for accident-related treatment.

DepEd remains in close coordination with its regional and division offices to ensure that all affected learners, teachers, and staff receive timely and appropriate support and that schools can safely resume operations as soon as possible.
