For many, working at Disney represents the pinnacle of a creative career. To be part of the studio that brought to life timeless classics like The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast is a dream most artists can only imagine. For Tom Bancroft, however, that dream was a reality—until a deeper calling led him to surrender it all for a purpose he could not ignore.

Bancroft’s decision was not driven by burnout, creative differences, or lack of opportunity. In fact, he had just been offered the role of lead animator on Lilo & Stitch, a coveted project that would have cemented his legacy even further. But instead of accepting, he chose to leave, joking later that he left Mickey behind “to work with vegetables.” That step of faith led him to VeggieTales, the beloved Christian animated series, where he discovered a greater joy than he had ever known at Disney.

In a recent appearance on CBN’s Faith in Culture Podcast, Bancroft opened up about what pulled him away from his dream job. “I think I was able to dodge it for a long time,” he admitted. “But the calling got very loud in the 2000s. In 2000, I broke away from Disney, and I felt like I knew exactly where I needed to go.” For Bancroft, that “loud calling” was the undeniable tug of his Christian faith.

He described the shift not as abandoning a dream, but as God planting a new one. While Disney had given him a platform to showcase his artistry, faith-based work offered him something deeper: the chance to integrate prayer and spiritual purpose into his daily craft. “We’re praying at the beginning of meetings,” he recalled of his time on VeggieTales. “And I had just left a studio where I couldn’t talk about my faith in the hallways.”

Since leaving Disney, Bancroft has built a career defined not only by technical excellence but also by devotion to his values. He authored two widely respected books on character design—Creating Characters with Personality and Character Mentor—that are now required texts at art schools around the world. He co-founded The Bancroft Brothers Animation Podcast, currently one of the most popular shows on animation, and launched platforms like TaughtByAPro.com to mentor the next generation of artists.

Now, Bancroft is directing Light of the World, a hand-drawn animated film retelling the story of Jesus Christ, set to release in theaters this September. In many ways, it is the culmination of his journey: combining his unmatched skill in animation with the mission that drew him away from Disney twenty-five years ago.

For Bancroft, surrendering a dream was not the end of his story, but the beginning of something greater. “God gave me a new dream,” he said. And through that obedience, he has shown that true success is not measured by fame or accolades, but by the courage to follow a higher calling.
