Esquire Philippines’ ‘Man at His Best’ which aims to honor 8 exemplary individuals, was held last November 27 at the posh events venue Shooting Gallery in Makati. Notable people in the field of business, film, journalism, music, and sports where chosen to showcase the definition of being a ‘Man at His Best’.
Sen. Risa Hontiveros’ name stood out for winning the Maverick of the Year award, since she is a woman. The Esquire website has this to say about her: “One of the finest stateswomen of our time, Senator Risa Hontiveros is a class act on and off the podium. Where most politicians are known for their controversies and scandals, Hontiveros will be remembered in history books for her fearless and just causes long after she’s left the Senate.”
The outspoken lone opposition senator is very grateful to Esquire for having been chosen. “I hope that all of our awards will inspire the Filipinos to work together, to do the stuff that we need to do, so that we can pull ourselves out of any problem, and towards our dreams for our Inang Bayan,” she said in an exclusive interview with Showbiz Beat Media.
Hontiveros did not expect the award at all, though she described the experience as “affirming”. “I want to expand the definition of maverick to instill the fact that no one of us can do everything all at the time, all alone. We need each other so magtulungan po talaga tayo,” she explained.
The women’s rights advocate made it known that she’s passionate about this because of her identity as woman, which makes the “thirst to be recognized” organic because of the patriarchy. She also shared that she has been mentored all her life by “women who enjoy being women and who are strong in their own way.” One of future plans as we just to the new normal with regards to the nation’s economy is to push for a law granting maternity benefits to female informal sector workers.
Meanwhile, here are rest of the winners: EJ Obiena (Athlete of the Year), Cezar Consing (Businessman of the Year), Alden Richards (Entertainer of the Year), Eraserheads (Artist of the Year), Soliman Cruz (Actor of the Year), Quark Henares (Creative of the Year), Atom Araullo (Journalist of the Year).
The co-presentor of the event is “The New Axe Effect”, hence the green and black theme.
