How Christians Can Grow to Love Going to Church

There’s a certain magic about anticipation — like a child counting down the days to Christmas morning or an artist eager to unveil their masterpiece. But when it comes to church, many Christians struggle with enthusiasm. The question is, how can believers grow to genuinely love going to church — not out of obligation, but from a place of heartfelt desire?

We must revisit the Bible‘s invitation to community. Hebrews 10:24-25 says, “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together… but encouraging one another.” Church isn’t just a building or a weekly event; it’s a living, breathing family of faith. When Christians understand church as a place to spur one another on, encouragement naturally becomes a reason to look forward to gathering. Loving church grows as we realize it is a vital source of spiritual nourishment and mutual upliftment.

Loving church flows from a fresh perspective on worship. Psalm 95:1 urges us, “Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.” Worship is a celebration, an expression of gratitude and awe for who God is and what He has done. When we embrace church as a joyful encounter with God rather than a ritual, worship becomes the heartbeat of our love for church. The music, the prayers, and the Word shared all come together to remind us that God is present and active among His people.

Another key to growing in love for church is rooted in purpose. Ephesians 2:19-22 paints a beautiful picture: “You are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household… built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.” Church is the place where God’s kingdom is visibly built, brick by brick, through lives changed and faith deepened. Recognizing that our presence contributes to this divine work gives church attendance a new dimension — it’s not just for our benefit but for the flourishing of others too.

For many Christians, hesitation toward church comes from pain or unmet expectations. But 1 Corinthians 12:12-14 reminds us, “Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body… so it is with Christ.” Every person belongs and matters, imperfections and all. Loving church grows as we embrace our role within the body and extend grace to others, realizing that the church is a refuge where God’s love heals and restores.

Lastly, consistency breeds affection. Like any relationship, the more time and intentionality we invest in church, the deeper our connection grows. Acts 2:42 describes the early believers’ devotion: “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.” Emulating this devotion helps transform church from a duty into a delight.

In essence, loving church isn’t about perfection or excitement on day one — it’s a journey of seeing church as God’s design for growth, encouragement, worship, and community. When we lean into these truths, church becomes not just a place we go, but a place we long to be.
