Is Kairos Mentioned in the Bible?

In the pages of Scripture, time is more than a sequence of hours and days—it carries meaning, purpose, and divine intention. Among the Greek words that capture this idea, kairos stands out as a term often discussed in Christian circles. But is it actually mentioned in the Bible, and what does it mean for believers today?

The Greek word kairos appears several times in the New Testament and is generally translated as “opportune time,” “season,” or “appointed time.” Unlike chronos, which refers to chronological or sequential time, kairos emphasizes a God-appointed moment—a time when significant events unfold according to His plan. This distinction matters, because while human schedules revolve around chronos, God’s purposes operate within kairos.

One clear example is found in the Gospel of Luke: “For the time (kairos) is coming when all who kill you will think they are offering a service to God” (Luke 21:16–17, emphasis added). Here, kairos points to a divinely appointed period in history, not merely a generic moment. Similarly, in Romans 5:6, Paul writes, “For while we were still helpless, at the right time (kairos) Jesus died for the ungodly.” This highlights that Jesus’ sacrifice was not random—it occurred at God’s perfect, ordained time.

The concept of kairos appears again in Galatians 6:9: “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time (kairos) we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” This verse encourages Christians to trust God’s timing, emphasizing patience and perseverance. It reassures believers that God’s plan unfolds according to His wisdom, not human expectations.

In the Gospels, kairos often signals urgency combined with opportunity. In Mark 1:15, Jesus declares, “The time (kairos) has come. The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!” The use of kairos here conveys more than chronological timing—it’s a decisive, spiritually significant moment when God’s kingdom intersects with human lives.

Understanding kairos deepens our faith and perspective. It reminds us that God is not constrained by human clocks or calendars. Instead, He orchestrates events to fulfill His purposes in ways that may surprise us. As believers, recognizing kairos moments invites us to respond with attentiveness, courage, and obedience. Whether it’s an opportunity to share the Gospel, offer encouragement, or act in service, these moments carry eternal significance.

In essence, kairos in the Bible is God’s “right time” for action, transformation, and revelation. From Jesus’ death and the resurrection to the unfolding of His kingdom in our hearts, the Bible assures us that nothing happens outside God’s divine timing. By seeking to live attuned to kairos, Christians can embrace both the urgency and the assurance of God’s plan, trusting that every season has purpose and every moment can be sacred.
