The Gospel music world is mourning the loss of Richard Smallwood, an award-winning singer, songwriter, and musician whose work reshaped the sound and scope of modern gospel. Smallwood’s family confirmed his passing through a statement shared on social media, asking for privacy as they grieve and honor his remarkable legacy. According to an obituary released by his representative, he died early Tuesday morning due to complications from kidney failure, following years of health challenges that limited his public appearances and recording work.

Born in Atlanta and raised in Washington, D.C., Smallwood showed extraordinary musical promise from a young age. Encouraged by his mother, he began playing music by ear at five, took formal lessons by seven, and organized his own gospel group while still a child. His talent later flourished academically at Howard University, where he graduated cum laude with a degree in music, grounding his creativity in both discipline and faith.

Smallwood’s impact on gospel music was profound and widely recognized. Inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2006, he was praised for “clearly and solidly” changing the face of black gospel music. His compositions fused traditional gospel foundations with classical movements, resulting in powerful, sophisticated works that resonated across generations and denominations.

Throughout his career, Smallwood earned multiple Dove Awards, Stellar Awards, and a GRAMMY, along with eight GRAMMY nominations. He also contributed to the acclaimed 1992 production of Handel’s Messiah: A Soulful Celebration, which received a GRAMMY for Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album. Additional honors included recognition from the Smithsonian Institution as a gospel innovator and songwriter, and Washington, D.C.’s Mayoral Art Award for artistic excellence.

Among his most beloved compositions is “Total Praise,” a song that has become a staple in churches and concerts worldwide. Its enduring popularity reflects Smallwood’s gift for crafting music that was both theologically rich and emotionally stirring. In 2019, he published an autobiography titled Total Praise, offering a candid look at his upbringing, ministry, and personal journey.

In the book and subsequent interviews, Smallwood spoke openly about struggles with grief, loss, and depression, emphasizing how God’s guidance and the influence of earlier gospel greats for shaping his path, viewing every season of his life as intentional preparation.

His ministry reached far beyond awards, touching choirs, musicians, and congregations seeking reverence and beauty in worship. Through careful arrangements, disciplined musicianship, and unwavering faith, he demonstrated that sacred music could honor God while pursuing excellence. That conviction became a guiding principle for countless artists who followed his example with humility, gratitude, and enduring hope. Amen forever remembered today.
