No Other gods: Honoring the First Commandment

God number 1

SHARE

The First Commandment still echoes with clear conviction: “You shall have no other gods before Me.” (Exodus 20:3). This divine directive, given on Mount Sinai, remains just as relevant today—calling believers to a life of singular devotion and uncompromising worship of the one true God.

This isn’t merely about ancient idolatry or golden calves. Today’s “other gods” come subtly disguised—in the form of success, relationships, status, material possessions, and even our own ambitions. Jesus cautioned in Matthew 6:24, “No one can serve two masters… You cannot serve God and money.” These words press us to evaluate: What competes for our ultimate affection and loyalty?

Unlike trends that fade or ideologies that evolve, God’s commandment is timeless. It’s not a call to austerity but to alignment—prioritizing our Creator over everything else. The psalmist writes, “Whom have I in heaven but You? And earth has nothing I desire besides You.” (Psalm 73:25). That kind of worship doesn’t come by accident. It’s a daily choice—a reordering of loves.

Consider the subtle shifts: a hobby that consumes all your free time, a career that defines your worth, or even a relationship that dictates your joy. These things aren’t wrong in themselves—but when they rise above God in our hearts, they become rivals to His rightful place.

Honoring the First Commandment begins with intentional worship. In Deuteronomy 6:5, we are instructed, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” That doesn’t leave room for half-hearted devotion. It requires surrender—a laying down of idols, no matter how beautiful, beneficial, or beloved they seem.

The early church understood this call. When Paul wrote to the Corinthians, he challenged them to “flee from idolatry” (1 Corinthians 10:14) and to center their lives around Christ alone. Today, we face a similar challenge: to live set apart in a culture that glorifies self above God.

What would it look like to truly honor this commandment in 2025? It may mean logging off social media when it fuels envy, walking away from opportunities that compromise your values, or simply starting the day with prayer before anything else. True worship is not confined to a Sunday morning; it’s a lifestyle of placing God first.

When we honor the First Commandment, we experience a deeper freedom—not the fleeting rush that the world offers, but the lasting peace of knowing we are centered on something eternal. As Jesus reminds us in Matthew 22:37, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” That’s not just the first commandment—it’s the foundation of a fulfilled life.

Let’s return to the heart of worship. No other gods. Just Him. Always.
