We Don’t Replace Him, We Continue His Work: A Christian on Kirk’s Influence

Now That Easter’s Passed, What’s on Jesus’ Agenda?

Easter Sunday may be behind us, but the risen Christ is not done working. In fact, His resurrection set in motion a mission that continues to this very day. Jesus’ agenda after Easter is clear: to build His church, to equip His followers, and to bring the message of salvation to all nations.

The resurrection of Jesus was not the end of the story—it was the turning point. When the stone rolled away and Jesus walked out of the tomb, He defeated sin and death once and for all. That victory was not private or symbolic; it was public and powerful.

His post-resurrection appearances to His disciples were purposeful: Jesus was commissioning them to carry the Gospel forward. As He said in Luke 24:47–48, “Repentance for forgiveness of sins will be proclaimed in His name to all the nations… You are witnesses of these things.”

This mission continues through the church. The season after Easter reminds us that Jesus did not return to the Father immediately. He stayed for forty days, teaching His disciples, opening their eyes to Scripture, and preparing them for the arrival of the Holy Spirit. His agenda was—and still is—to make disciples and empower them to live out the truth of the resurrection.

Easter changes how we live. If Christ has truly risen, then life must look different. As D. Scott Hildreth said, Easter is not just a date; it’s a way of life. The resurrection power calls us not to return to “normal,” but to step into the newness of life. Paul puts it plainly in Romans 6:4: “Just as Christ was raised from the dead… we too may live a new life.” That new life includes obedience, boldness in witness, love for one another, and faithfulness in trials.

The son of God’s agenda now also includes preparing a place for us (John 14:2–3) and interceding on our behalf (Romans 8:34). He reigns as King, and from heaven He directs the expansion of His kingdom through Spirit-empowered believers. This kingdom, inaugurated by the resurrection, continues to grow—not by military force or political systems, but by transformed lives and the proclamation of the Gospel.

Moreover, Jesus’ agenda leads to Pentecost. The resurrection paved the way for the sending of the Holy Spirit, who now dwells in believers. This Spirit brings resurrection life into our daily walk, empowering us to resist sin, grow in holiness, and reflect Christ. As N.T. Wright noted, Christians live in the overlap of two ages—this present world and the world to come. The resurrection life is a foretaste of what’s ahead, yet already active in us.

So, what’s next now that Easter’s passed? Jesus continues to call His people to live as witnesses of His resurrection. He sends us into a broken world with hope, truth, and love. He works through us to build His church and draw the lost to salvation. Easter may be behind us on the calendar, but its mission is in full motion—and Jesus is leading the way.
