Pixar’s New Animated Series ‘Win or Lose’ Features First Openly Christian Character

Pixar’s latest animated series, Win or Lose, has been making headlines for featuring Disney’s first openly Christian character in nearly two decades. The show, which debuted on Disney+ in February 2025, presents a unique storytelling style that delves into the inner thoughts of its characters, giving viewers a glimpse into their emotions and struggles.

The series follows a group of preteen softball players preparing for a big championship game. Each episode focuses on a different character, offering diverse perspectives on friendship, family, and personal growth.

One of the standout episodes introduces Laurie, a 12-year-old softball player who turns to prayer in a moment of doubt — a significant moment for Christian representation in Disney’s storytelling.

In Laurie’s episode, she faces anxiety about her performance on the field and the pressure to meet expectations. Before her game, she quietly prays, saying, “Dear Heavenly Father, please give me strength. I have faith, but sometimes the doubt creeps in.”

This heartfelt moment reflects Laurie’s sincere belief and her reliance on God for guidance. In her room, a cutout of an angel serves as a subtle reminder of her faith, adding depth to her character.

Laurie’s story resonates with viewers who understand the comfort that prayer can provide in moments of uncertainty. Her prayer reflects themes of humility and trust, echoing Philippians 4:6-7: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

The inclusion of a Christian character is notable because it marks Disney’s first such portrayal since Bridge to Terabithia (2007), where themes of faith were discussed as the characters visited a church. Even earlier, The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996) featured the song God Help the Outcasts, a moving prayer for the forgotten and oppressed.

Director Carrie Hobson revealed that Laurie’s character was inspired by her own childhood experiences. While Hobson didn’t specifically highlight the religious angle during production, Laurie’s prayer adds authenticity to her journey, showing how faith can offer comfort and strength in challenging moments.

Though Win or Lose includes various themes, Laurie’s story has drawn positive attention from Christian audiences. For families seeking content that reflects faith-based values, Laurie’s prayer moment stands out as a rare and refreshing addition to Disney’s lineup.

Despite some controversy surrounding changes to the series, Win or Lose remains a heartfelt show that emphasizes relatable emotions and life lessons. By portraying Laurie’s quiet yet powerful expression of faith, Pixar has created a moment that highlights the importance of trust in God during times of uncertainty.

As Win or Lose continues to unfold, Laurie’s story serves as a reminder that simple acts of faith can offer strength, courage, and hope — values that resonate with viewers of all backgrounds.
