The Biggest Highlights from This Year’s Met Gala

Despite a rainy forecast, the 2025 Met Gala dazzled with elegance, purpose, and historical flair. This year’s theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” delivered a refined tribute to sartorial excellence, taking inspiration from Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity. From sharp tailoring to symbolic accessories, the evening was an impeccable showcase of craftsmanship and cultural expression.
The theme steered attention toward Black men’s fashion throughout history, with nods to the Harlem Renaissance, post-war jazz scenes, and modern streetwear culture. Blue replaced the traditional red carpet as the night’s signature shade, serving as the canvas for a vibrant procession of tailored silhouettes, unexpected embellishments, and standout performances.
Co-chairs Colman Domingo, Pharrell Williams, A$AP Rocky, and Lewis Hamilton not only brought star power but also embodied the spirit of the theme with impeccable detail and purpose in their attire.
One of the night’s earliest standouts was the surprise musical performance by Silk & Sound, a sharply dressed ensemble led by Allen René Louis. As they sang a soulful rendition of “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” the group set the tone for the night—uplifting, nostalgic, and beautifully polished. Their appearance marked a rare but welcome intersection of music and fashion right at the entrance.
Fashion-wise, Lewis Hamilton turned heads with a Grace Wales Bonner creation that fused sportswear precision with cultural nods. “The ivory represents purity,” he shared. “The shells are about the currency of tradition.” His carefully adorned suit was among the most talked-about of the evening. André 3000 took things a step further with a piano-shaped backpack, while Jon Batiste added a musical twist by carrying a saxophone down the blue carpet.
Designers shone just as brightly as the celebrities. Pharrell Williams designed several looks under the Louis Vuitton banner, balancing classic tailoring with experimental flair. Meanwhile, Balmain’s Olivia Rousteing outfitted a diverse group of attendees, with Diana Ross’s sculptural gown earning praise for its elegance and drama. Bishme Cromartie and Sergio Hudson also made notable impressions, dressing stars like Quinta Brunson and Zuri Hall with flair and finesse.
While the Vogue livestream had long ended, Kim Kardashian made a fashionably late entrance in a textured black gown with cutouts and a dramatic low-tipped hat. Rihanna, though absent from the carpet, made headlines when A$AP Rocky confirmed she is expecting their third child—a sweet surprise that added a personal highlight to the glamorous evening.
With $31 million raised—the highest in Met Gala history—the event underscored its relevance beyond fashion. It was a celebration not just of garments, but of creativity, heritage, and timeless elegance.
