The Blessed Virgin Mary, chosen by God to be the Mother of our Savior, holds a unique place in salvation history. Scripture proclaims her blessedness: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!” (Luke 1:42). Her obedience and purity prepared the way for Christ’s coming into the world. Yet behind Mary’s extraordinary role stand two figures of quiet faith and devotion—her parents, Saints Joachim and Anne. Though the Bible does not provide extensive details about them, tradition and Christian devotion recognize their steadfast lives as instrumental in God’s divine plan.

Joachim and Anne are honored as a faithful couple who, despite years of barrenness, placed their hope in God. Their story echoes the Old Testament accounts of Abraham and Sarah, who were blessed with a child in their old age (Genesis 21:1–3). According to tradition, Joachim was a man of prayer and integrity, and Anne a woman of deep devotion. Their long wait for a child became a test of faith, teaching them patience, humility, and reliance on the Lord.

When their prayers were answered, Anne conceived and bore Mary, who was destined to become the Theotokos—the God-bearer. The psalmist’s words find fulfillment here: “Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward” (Psalm 127:3). Their daughter’s birth was not merely a family blessing; it was a turning point in the history of redemption.

Christianity tradition holds that Joachim and Anne dedicated Mary to God from her early years. In their home, she was nurtured in faith, learning to love and serve the Lord wholeheartedly. The reverence and devotion of her parents created the fertile ground in which Mary’s “yes” to the angel Gabriel could take root: “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38).

In this way, Joachim and Anne remind Christian families of their sacred duty to guide their children toward holiness. Just as Mary was prepared through their faith-filled example, so parents today are called to raise their children in the knowledge and love of God.

Though Scripture does not name Joachim and Anne directly, the Church has long honored them as saints. Their feast day, celebrated on July 26, invites the faithful to reflect on the importance of family in God’s plan of salvation. They stand as patrons for parents and grandparents, interceding for families who seek to live in faith and devotion.

Mary’s holiness did not arise in isolation. It was cultivated in the faithful household of Joachim and Anne, who trusted in God’s promises. Through them, we see that even ordinary lives of faith can become the foundation for extraordinary works of God.

Their legacy continues to inspire: in raising Mary, they helped prepare the way for Jesus, the Light of the World. “The Lord has done great things for us, and we are glad” (Psalm 126:3).
