The Miracle That Changed Everything for Courtney Smallbone’s Family

Courtney Smallbone recently shared a story that has touched the hearts of countless fans: the miracle that saved her son, Leo, when he was just eight weeks old. The wife of Luke Smallbone of for KING & COUNTRY opened up about the life-changing moment on the Heaven Meets Earth Podcast with Abigail Robertson and Ryan Bethea.
The Smallbones, parents to four children, experienced what every parent fears most: the sudden and shocking danger of losing a child. Courtney recalls the day with vivid clarity. “I finally got all three down, which was like a miracle in and of itself, and I put them down for a nap and went out to have a cup of coffee and to read,” she shared. But even in that ordinary moment, something extraordinary was unfolding.

Courtney noticed her vision blurring as she tried to read. It was then that she felt a strong prompting in her heart. “I hear this voice say, ‘Go check on Leo, and don’t believe what you’re going to see.’” Acting immediately, she rushed to her newborn son and found him in a terrifying state—blue, cold, and limp, with blood on his face. Panic set in, and in a moment of desperation, she picked him up and ran outside to where her husband was mowing the lawn.
Luke Smallbone was faced with a moment no parent should ever experience. With his son appearing lifeless, he called 9-1-1 while Courtney prayed fervently. “You’re just looking at death. Your biggest fear is right in front of your face,” Courtney recalled. They attempted CPR, but nothing seemed to work. Then, in an almost surreal instant, Leo’s chest began to rise, his color returned, and he started crying. “It’s like an on-off switch,” Courtney explained. “He starts breathing. I’m just screaming, and Luke’s still on the phone. They’re like, ‘What?’ And I just… it’s miraculous.”

Paramedics soon arrived, and Courtney accompanied Leo to the hospital. There, doctors discovered that Leo had a skull deformity called craniosynostosis, which required monitoring but had not stopped his remarkable recovery. Eight years later, Leo is thriving, growing up alongside his siblings with a zest for life that his parents describe as a daily reminder of God’s grace.
Reflecting on the event, Courtney shared how profoundly it changed her perspective. “We only see in part. That was a moment in my life where I’m like, ‘I’m not the same.’ Nothing’s impossible if God wants to do it. Every day is a gift with him. Children are a gift.”
The story of Leo’s survival is more than a miraculous moment—it’s a testimony of faith, hope, and the profound love that guides a family through life’s most daunting trials. For the Smallbones, it has transformed their understanding of life and reinforced a commitment to cherish every moment.
This extraordinary event serves as a powerful reminder to all that even in the most impossible situations, miracles can—and do—happen. For Courtney and Luke Smallbone, the miracle of Leo is a daily celebration of life, faith, and the enduring power of hope.
