What Tobias and Sarah Teach Us About Love, Trust, and Commitment

Love is one of the most celebrated themes in Scripture, not just as an emotion but as a covenant rooted in God’s design. Among the many biblical stories that highlight the sacredness of marriage, the account of Tobias and Sarah in the Book of Tobit offers timeless lessons about love, trust, and commitment. Their story is not simply about romance but about a relationship built upon faith in God, prayer, and perseverance through trials.

When Tobias and Sarah first came together, their union was marked by a remarkable act of trust. On their wedding night, Tobias did not rush into physical intimacy; instead, he invited Sarah to join him in prayer. Scripture records: “So they began to pray that night, and said, ‘Blessed art thou, O God of our fathers, and blessed is thy holy and glorious name forever. Let the heavens bless thee and all thy creatures’” (Tobit 8:5).

This act reminds us that love grounded in prayer becomes unshakable. By lifting their relationship before the Lord, Tobias and Sarah recognized that God must be the center of their marriage. In today’s world, where many relationships falter under pressure, their example calls us to place prayer as the foundation of our love.

Sarah’s life before Tobias was filled with despair. She had lost seven husbands, each taken by a demon on the night of their wedding. Understandably, she feared her future. Yet Tobias trusted the angel Raphael’s guidance and entered into this marriage believing in God’s protection.

The Scripture tells us: “This marriage hath been made in heaven. Take her in God’s name, and bring her home to thy father” (Tobit 7:12). Tobias’s trust was not merely in Sarah but in God’s plan for their union. True love, therefore, is not blind—it sees with the eyes of faith, believing that God is at work even when circumstances seem impossible.

Marriage is not free of challenges, and Tobias and Sarah knew this well. Yet their story assures us that commitment is about enduring together under God’s care. After their prayer, God delivered them from the power of evil, proving that His blessing rests on those who remain steadfast in faith.

This commitment is echoed in the words of Ecclesiastes: “Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow” (Ecclesiastes 4:9–10). Tobias and Sarah teach us that commitment is more than a promise made at the altar—it is a lifelong covenant to walk in faith, lifting each other up when life becomes difficult.
