The Gospel: Why Christians Never Outgrow Its Message

I am Enjoying Life, But Not Drawn to Sin

Some days feel lighter than others, filled with laughter, gratitude, and a sense that the world is more vibrant than we often allow ourselves to notice. It’s in these moments that we realize joy is not dependent on circumstances but on the presence of God in our lives. The Psalmist reminds us, “You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore” (Psalm 16:11). True contentment flows from walking closely with the Lord, not from chasing fleeting pleasures that leave the heart empty.

Living faithfully doesn’t mean renouncing every pleasure or fun in life. The Scripture are filled with examples of God’s people enjoying celebrations, feasts, and moments of rest. King Solomon, in Ecclesiastes 3, acknowledges that there is a time to laugh, a time to dance, and a time to enjoy the gifts God provides. These experiences are meant to be received with thanksgiving, yet they do not distract from living righteously. Joy and holiness are not at odds; in fact, they complement one another when rooted in God’s Word.

One of the key distinctions in a believer’s life is knowing that delighting in the Lord is different from indulging in sin. Paul writes, “For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit” (Romans 14:17). This verse reminds us that pleasure can exist in alignment with God’s will. We can laugh, celebrate, and enjoy friendships without letting sinful desires govern our actions. The joy that comes from God strengthens our resolve to live faithfully, not carelessly.

Choosing the path of righteousness often requires discernment. The world offers many enticements that seem harmless at first but can gradually pull the heart away from God. James warns, “But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire” (James 1:14). Awareness and prayer are our safeguards. By staying in constant fellowship with God, reading His Word, and praying for discernment, believers can navigate life’s pleasures wisely, enjoying them without compromise.

A life that balances joy and obedience testifies to the goodness of God. Delight in the blessings around you, from friendships to nature to simple daily pleasures, but let them be seasoned with gratitude and awareness of His presence. As Paul encourages in Philippians 4:4, “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.” Rejoicing does not mean turning a blind eye to sin but embracing a life that finds fulfillment in God’s love and guidance. It is possible to experience life fully, with vigor and laughter, while still walking in the Spirit and avoiding the snares of sin. When life is enjoyed in this way, it becomes a living testimony of God’s grace, a joy that honors Him, and a peace that the world cannot take away.
