Scriptural Evidence That God Disapproves of Divorce

Marriage is one of God’s most sacred institutions—a divine covenant that reflects His faithfulness and love for His people. Throughout Scripture, God consistently reveals His disapproval of divorce, emphasizing the permanence and sanctity of marital vows. Far from being a mere contract, marriage is a holy union designed to mirror the unbreakable bond between Christ and the Church. Here’s a closer look at the biblical foundation that upholds God’s stance against divorce.

In the Old Testament, God’s displeasure toward divorce is explicitly declared in Malachi 2:16: “For the Lord, the God of Israel, says that He hates divorce, for it covers one’s garment with violence.” This verse captures not only the moral gravity of divorce but also its destructive impact. When a covenant is broken, it leaves behind emotional and spiritual wounds—what Scripture describes as “violence.” In this context, God’s hatred of divorce is not rooted in condemnation of individuals but in His love for the unity and peace that marriage was meant to bring.

Jesus Himself reaffirmed this truth in the New Testament. In Matthew 19:4–6, He declared, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.” These words echo Genesis 2:24, underscoring that marriage is not a human arrangement but a divine joining. By forbidding separation, Christ highlighted that marriage reflects the faithfulness and permanence of God’s covenant love.

When questioned about divorce, Jesus spoke even more directly in Matthew 19:8–9, saying, “Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts, permitted you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so.” Divorce, then, was a concession to human stubbornness, never part of God’s original design. It is a deviation from the perfect harmony that God intended for marriage—a bond built on love, forgiveness, and steadfast commitment.

The Apostle Paul, inspired by the Holy Spirit, reinforced this teaching in 1 Corinthians 7:10–11: “Now to the married I command, yet not I but the Lord: A wife is not to depart from her husband. But even if she does depart, let her remain unmarried or be reconciled to her husband. And a husband is not to divorce his wife.” Paul’s words reflect a call to reconciliation and endurance, urging believers to uphold the covenant they made before God.

Divorce, in essence, contradicts the nature of God’s faithfulness. Just as He never abandons His people despite their failures, He calls husbands and wives to mirror that same enduring love. In Ephesians 5:25, Paul exhorts, “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her.” This sacrificial love leaves no room for self-centeredness or division—it embodies forgiveness, patience, and grace.

The Bible presents marriage as a divine covenant that reflects the very heart of God. While human weakness can fracture what was meant to last, Scripture makes clear that God’s ideal is unwavering faithfulness. Divorce, therefore, is not in harmony with His will, for He desires that every union built in His name stands firm as a testimony of His unchanging love.
