Stewardship and Purpose: Using Resources for God’s Kingdom

A closer look at how Christians can honor God by using resources wisely to support the church, gospel work, and Kingdom mission.

Money has always been a sensitive topic among Christians. On one hand, Scripture warns about the dangers of loving wealth. On the other hand, the Bible contains many examples of faithful individuals who used their resources to support God’s work. The question is not whether someone is rich or poor, but how they steward what they have been entrusted with.
In a world where success is often measured by possessions and status, followers of Christ are called to view resources differently. Wealth, influence, skills, and opportunities can all become tools for advancing God’s purposes when placed in His hands.
Recognizing That Everything Belongs to God
One of the foundational principles of biblical stewardship is understanding that all resources ultimately belong to God. Christians are not owners but managers of what He has entrusted to them.

King David acknowledged this truth when he prayed as written in 1 Chronicles 29:12, “Wealth and honor come from you; you are the ruler of all things.” This perspective changes how we view money and possessions. Instead of asking, “How much of my wealth should I give to God?” the better question becomes, “How does God want me to use what already belongs to Him?”
Whether someone has significant financial resources or only a little, faithful stewardship begins with surrender. It involves seeking God’s guidance through prayer and asking how available resources can be used to reflect His character and purposes.
Supporting the Spread of the Gospel
Throughout Scripture, God often used people of means to support His work. Wealthy Christians helped provide for ministries, care for those in need, and create opportunities for others to hear His message.
Today, resources can help advance the gospel in many ways. Christians can support local ministries, missionaries, churches, outreach programs, educational initiatives, and humanitarian efforts that point people toward Jesus. Financial generosity can also help equip disciples and provide practical assistance to communities facing hardship.

The Apostle Paul encouraged us to adopt this mindset as written in 1 Timothy 6:18, “Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.”
Notice that Paul did not condemn wealth itself. Instead, he challenged us to use it responsibly and generously. Wealth becomes dangerous when it becomes the goal of life, but it becomes powerful when it serves God’s purposes.
Investing in What Has Eternal Value
Not everyone has large financial resources, but everyone has something they can offer. Time, talents, professional skills, relationships, and influence can all be used for kingdom impact.
A business leader may create opportunities for ethical employment. A professional may mentor younger Christians. A family may open their home for ministry and hospitality. Others may support charitable causes or serve faithfully within their church community.
The Bible consistently teaches that earthly wealth is temporary, while eternal investments have lasting significance. Jesus encouraged His followers to focus on treasures that cannot fade or be lost. When we use our resources to help others know Christ, strengthen faith communities, and demonstrate God’s love, we participate in work that reaches beyond this life and into Heaven.
Ultimately, advancing the kingdom of God is not reserved for the wealthy. It is a calling for all Christians. Whether entrusted with much or little, every Christian has the opportunity to honor God through faithful stewardship, generosity, and a willingness to place every resource at His service.
