Tauren Wells on Viral Prayer: ‘I Argued with God’

Christian singer Tauren Wells recently captured hearts in a now-viral moment when he paused mid-concert to pray for fellow artist Forrest Frank. But what seemed spontaneous on stage almost didn’t happen.

“I kind of argued with God about it,” Wells told CBN’s Faith in Culture, reflecting on the prayer he led for Frank at the Ohio State Fair. The singer was performing just days after Frank revealed he had fractured two vertebrae in his back, and Wells initially questioned whether prayer during a state-run event was appropriate.

Wells recalled trying to reason with God, asking when—or even if—he should pray. But the answer became undeniable when, during the final song of his set, all of his in-ear monitors stopped working, leaving only his microphone functional. “I thought, ‘Alright, Lord. You win,’” Wells admitted. “It seems very noble and spiritual, but I was arguing with God the whole way.”

Despite his hesitation, Wells said praying for Frank became a meaningful opportunity to encourage the young singer, who later experienced a miraculous recovery. “I felt this prayer could be an encouragement for him in his time of pain,” Wells said.

Beyond this viral moment, Wells shared deeper reflections on the Christian music industry, which he believes faces spiritual opposition. He noted that the surge in Christian music consumption over recent years has been met with challenges, including personal struggles of artists and public controversies. “Whenever God begins to elevate something, of course, the enemy plants seeds to dismantle it,” Wells explained. He referenced Jesus’ parable in Matthew 13, emphasizing that spiritual battles often involve removing the “weeds” from the “wheat.”

Wells urged believers to recognize that sin and evil are not merely external but part of a spiritual struggle. “We’re not just seeing present sin; it’s the enemy trying to have tares grow with the wheat,” he said. Yet he emphasized hope, reminding Christians of God’s grace and mercy. “Sin does not get the final say. If individuals surrender and repent, God’s faithfulness and forgiveness prevail.”

Expanding his perspective, Wells commented on broader world events, describing them as evidence of spiritual strategies at work. He emphasized the importance of awareness and prayer, quoting Ephesians 6:12-13:

“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.”

According to Wells, prayer, intercession, and fasting are vital tools for Christians to stand firm in the spiritual battle and advance God’s kingdom. “The enemy’s goal is to distract us and get us fighting the wrong battle,” he explained. “But with spiritual discernment and prayer, we are equipped to overcome the forces of darkness.”

Wells’ viral prayer for Forrest Frank serves as a reminder of the power of obedience and faith. Even amid hesitation or doubt, God’s guidance can turn a single act of prayer into a moment of healing, encouragement, and testimony for all who witness it.
