The Surprising Responses Jesus Gave to Would-Be Followers

Jesus’ conversations with three would-be followers reveal powerful truths about faith, discipleship, and putting God first.

Many people admired Jesus, listened to His teaching, and even expressed a desire to follow Him. Yet not everyone who said, “I will follow You,” actually became a disciple. The account of the would-be followers of Jesus is written in the Bible, particularly in Luke 9:57–62 is a powerful reminder that following Christ involves more than good intentions—it requires wholehearted commitment.

Their conversations with Jesus continue to speak to Christians today because they reveal the obstacles that often compete with our relationship with God. Whether those distractions are comfort, responsibilities, or attachment to the past, the passage encourages us to examine what it truly means to follow Him.

Following Jesus Requires a Changed Priority

In Luke 9, three different individuals expressed interest in following Jesus, but each encountered a challenging response. One was reminded that the Son of Man had “no place to lay His head,” while another hesitated because of family obligations. A third wanted to say goodbye before leaving.

In Luke 9:62, Jesus answered the last person with these words: “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”

These responses may seem difficult at first, but Jesus was emphasizing that discipleship demands complete devotion. Following Him is not simply adding faith to an already busy life. Instead, it means allowing Him to become the highest priority.

This does not mean family, work, or responsibilities are unimportant. Rather, Jesus teaches that every part of life should be placed under His authority. When we seek Him first through prayer, obedience, and trust, our other responsibilities find their proper place.

Faith Is Demonstrated Through Commitment

The story also reminds us that genuine faith is visible through action. It is easy to admire Jesus from a distance or agree with His teachings when they are convenient. The greater challenge is continuing to follow Him when the path requires sacrifice, patience, or uncertainty.

In Luke 9:23, Jesus made this clear when He said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.”

This daily commitment is possible because the Holy Spirit strengthens and guides us. As we grow through Scripture, fellowship with the church, and the message of the gospel, we become more willing to trust God’s direction even when it stretches our comfort zones.

The would-be followers remind us that hesitation often begins when something else competes for first place in our hearts. Jesus invites us to move beyond admiration into faithful obedience.

Looking Forward With an Eternal Perspective

The story of the would-be followers ultimately points toward an eternal perspective. Jesus consistently called His disciples to live with the Heavenly kingdom in view rather than temporary concerns. While earthly responsibilities matter, they should never replace our calling to follow Him wholeheartedly.

For Christians today, this passage is both a challenge and an encouragement. None of us follows Jesus perfectly, yet His invitation remains open. Every day presents another opportunity to choose Him above competing priorities, trusting that God’s plans are greater than our own.

The story asks an important question that remains relevant today: Are we simply interested in Jesus, or are we willing to follow Him wherever He leads?
