Learning from Stephen, The First Christian Martyr

bible 9

SHARE

The life of Stephen, recorded in the book of Acts, offers us more than just the story of the first Christian martyr—it presents a powerful testimony of faith, courage, and unwavering devotion to Christ. His witness continues to inspire believers today, reminding us that following Jesus requires boldness, conviction, and grace, even in the face of suffering.

Stephen first appears in Acts 6, chosen among the seven deacons to serve the early church. Scripture describes him as “a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit” (Acts 6:5). This detail is significant. Stephen was not elevated because of wealth, influence, or status, but because he was Spirit-filled. His life teaches us that true Christian service is rooted in godly character and dependence on the Holy Spirit.

Stephen’s ministry quickly drew attention, for “Stephen, full of grace and power, was doing great miracles and signs among the people” (Acts 6:8). Opposition arose from those who could not resist the wisdom and Spirit with which he spoke. When falsely accused, Stephen stood before the Sanhedrin and delivered a sweeping testimony of God’s faithfulness through Israel‘s history (Acts 7). He declared that the people had resisted the Holy Spirit, betrayed, and murdered the Righteous One, Jesus Christ. His courage under pressure challenges us: Are we willing to proclaim the truth of the Gospel, even when it is unpopular or costly?

As Stephen’s words cut to the heart, the crowd became enraged. Yet at this most dangerous moment, Stephen’s eyes were lifted heavenward. “But he, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God” (Acts 7:55). What a vision of encouragement! While earthly leaders condemned him, the risen Christ stood to receive him.

Even more moving is Stephen’s final prayer: “Lord, do not hold this sin against them” (Acts 7:60). These words mirror those of Jesus on the cross: “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34). Stephen’s Christlike compassion shows us that the greatest power of a Christian witness is not only in bold proclamation but in demonstrating the love and forgiveness of Christ, even toward enemies.

Stephen’s death was not in vain. Acts 8:1 records that Saul—later the Apostle Paul—was present and approved of the execution. Though at first an enemy of the church, Paul would later be transformed by Christ and carry the Gospel to the nations. In this way, Stephen’s testimony planted seeds that would bear fruit in one of Christianity’s greatest missionaries.

The legacy of Stephen, the first Christian martyr, continues to inspire believers to stand firm in their faith. His life demonstrates the importance of being Spirit-filled, bold in witness, and Christlike in love and forgiveness. Just as Stephen gazed heavenward in his final moments, we too are called to fix our eyes on Jesus, “the founder and perfecter of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2). May we learn from Stephen’s example, courageously living for Christ in every season of life.
