What Does God Expect From Those Blessed With Wealth?

Wealth brings opportunity and responsibility. Explore biblical principles for using money in ways that glorify God and serve His kingdom.

Money has always been a sensitive topic within the Christian life. Wealth itself is not condemned in the Bible, but the way people view and use it often reveals the condition of their hearts. Throughout Scripture, God entrusted resources to individuals not merely for personal comfort but for greater purposes that honor Him and bless others.

For rich Christians, the question is not whether having money is wrong. The more important question is this: How can wealth become an instrument that brings glory to God’s name and advances His kingdom?

Recognize That Wealth Is a Stewardship

The first step is understanding that all possessions ultimately belong to God. King David declared in 1 Chronicles 29:14, “Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand.”

This perspective changes everything. Wealth is not absolute ownership but stewardship. Every business success, investment opportunity, and financial increase is an opportunity to serve God’s purposes.

A faithful steward asks different questions. Instead of, “How much can I keep?” the question becomes, “How can these resources reflect the character of God?” This mindset encourages humility and dependence on the Holy Spirit, who guides us in making wise decisions with their finances.

Invest in People and the Work of the Gospel

One of the most powerful ways to glorify God through wealth is by supporting the spread of the gospel. Throughout history, generous Christians have funded missions, cared for the poor, built ministries, and supported local church communities.

Jesus Himself taught in Matthew 6:19-20, which states that, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth… But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven.”

This does not mean neglecting financial responsibility. Rather, it means investing in things that carry eternal significance. Supporting missionaries, helping train disciples, funding charitable works, and assisting us in need are ways that earthly wealth can produce heavenly results.

Generosity also becomes a testimony of faith. It demonstrates trust that God will continue to provide and that eternal treasures matter more than temporary possessions.

Use Wealth to Reflect God’s Character

Financial abundance gives us unique opportunities to demonstrate compassion, justice, and mercy. The wealthy can provide jobs, support struggling families, contribute to humanitarian causes, and create spaces where people encounter the love of Christ.

The New Testament repeatedly encourages generosity because it reflects God’s own giving nature. When we use our resources to lift burdens and bless others, they become living examples of Christ’s love.

This also requires intentional prayer. Wealth can easily become an idol if it replaces dependence on God. Regularly seeking His wisdom keeps financial success in proper perspective and reminds us that true security is found in Him alone.

Ultimately, money cannot buy salvation or guarantee a place in Heaven. Yet when wealth is surrendered to God, it becomes a powerful tool for kingdom purposes. Rich Christians have the opportunity to transform temporary resources into eternal impact, showing that their greatest treasure is not found in their possessions but in Jesus and His everlasting kingdom.
