The 2025 Papal Conclave, convened after the passing of Pope Francis, culminated in the election of Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost as the 267th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church. Cardinal Prevost, born in Chicago, became the first American pope in history and assumed the papal name Pope Leo XIV.

His election, confirmed on May 8, 2025, marked a significant moment in the Church’s history, as it brought a moderate and globally experienced leader to the papacy.

The conclave, a centuries-old tradition for selecting the pope, began with 133 cardinals gathering in the Vatican. The process involved multiple rounds of voting, with the first few producing black smoke, signaling no decision had been reached.

However, by the afternoon of May 8, the smoke from the Sistine Chapel chimney turned white, confirming the election of a new pope. The announcement of “habemus papam” (we have a pope) was made shortly after, and Pope Leo XIV appeared on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica to address the faithful.

Pope Leo XIV’s first public words, “Peace be with you,” resonated with the gathered crowd, reflecting the Church’s enduring call for peace and unity. He also paid tribute to Pope Francis, who had guided the Church for over a decade, and emphasized God‘s love for humanity.

His calm demeanor and inclusive message set the tone for his papacy, signaling a continuation of the compassionate leadership exemplified by his predecessor.

Cardinal Prevost’s background made him an appealing choice. He had deep experience in missionary work, particularly in Peru, where he had served as bishop of Chiclayo. He had also held influential positions within the Vatican, including heading the Dicastery for Bishops, which oversees the appointment of new bishops worldwide.

His extensive international experience, particularly in Latin America, aligns with the Church’s ongoing focus on global outreach and service to marginalized communities.

The election of a U.S. pope was particularly notable, as it reflected the increasingly global nature of the Catholic Church. Pope Leo XIV’s selection brought a sense of renewal and hope, with many seeing his election as a signal of the Church’s commitment to fostering peace, justice, and compassion in an increasingly complex world.

Following his election, Pope Leo XIV met with various global leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, who congratulated him on being the first American pope. While his election marks a historic moment, it also highlights the evolving nature of the papacy as the Church continues to address both modern challenges and its timeless spiritual mission.

In the days following his election, Pope Leo XIV is expected to focus on strengthening the Church’s global presence, particularly in regions facing socio-political instability. His leadership will be key in navigating the ongoing challenges facing the Catholic Church, including its role in modern society and its efforts to uphold traditional values while engaging with the complexities of the 21st century.
